Specification :

Selection Procedure for steel Sahara Geared Coupling

In Order to Make best possible selection It is Essential to take the following Factors in consideration before final selection.

  • HP to be transmitted
  • Shaft rpm
  • Desirable Safety factor
  • Diameter of the larger Shaft to be coupled

Computre effective tourque to be transmitted OR horse power per 100 rpm as below :

  • HP/100 = HP transmitted x 100 XSF / RPM
  • Effective torque in Kg-MT = HP TRANSMITTED x 726.2 xsf / RPM

Select the suitable gear coupling from the max torque (Kg-m) column or H.P. Capacity at 100 rpm column.

Cross Check : The selecte3d gear coupling should be CROSS CHECKED for the maximum allowable Shaft diameter from the max bore (d) mm column. The max allowable shaft diameter to be equal to or more than the diameter of large shaft to be coupled.

The gear coupling size should be finalised as the greater of the size selected on power (method A or B) on maximum allowed shaft diameter.

Example :

A gear coupling is to be selected to transmit 1000 hp from a fly wheel coupled with electric motor at 740 rpm to roughing mill (hot rolling) gear box the fly wheel shaft diameter is 180mm and reduction gear box input shaft diameter is 165 mm.

  • HP/100 rpm = 1000x100x3 / 740 = 4054 hp
  • Effective torque in Kg-MT = 1000x726x2x3/ 740 = 29440 Kg/MT

While both A& B lead to gear coupling size 107 but size 109 is selected because of allowable max shaft diameter of 180mm.

Example :

The above drive hp at output of reduction gear box (110 rpm shaft dra 235) and input of poron stand (Shaft dra 238 mm)

  • HP/100 rpm=1000x100x3 / 740 = 2727HP
  • Effective torque in Kg-MT = 1000x126x2x3 / 740 = 2727 HP

The selected size is gear coupling no. 113 as allowable torque is 20,000 Kg-m. HP/100 is 2793, and max bore is 330 mm

Material : 101 to 107 C55 Mn75 Casing & Hub Heat Treated from 235-265 BHN.

108 to 114 Casing - IS 1030 Gr 23-45 Hub C55 Mn75, Casing & Hub Head Treated from 235-265 BHN.
